Life as....Carmen Mon Oxide

Hello everyone.

This is my first blog post, so a bit of an experiment!

This one is about my new start. Some of you will know that I have been working on the cabaret circuit for the past six years, as a solo performer, and part of a double act. I had been performing under my real name, but I wanted a new start, a new identity which would really tell people something about what I do. I was lucky enough to have my name suggested to me by another performer, you know who you are! I wanted something that suggested that I am an opera singer, and with Carmen being my favourite opera character it seemed perfect. I also specialise in the darker side of cabaret, so having a poisonous pseudonym seemed just right.

I started life as Carmen Mon Oxide at Burlesque Idol at Madame Jojo's. I performed my first burlesque routine, a 'sing and fling' act to a Weimar-era cabaret song called 'I am a Vamp'. From the first time I heard this song I knew it had to be mine (I'm sure we've all been there!). I'm happy to say that I came second which I'm really pleased about as it was the first time taking my clothes off in public. I had been worried that I would get caught in my headset microphone, or my corset would get stuck in my wig, but it all seemed to go to plan, apart from the teething problems in the dressing room getting my stockings to stop rolling down every five minutes!

Up next I will be performing at Someone Call Me A Cabaret in The White Lion, Streatham on the 3rd of August. All proceeds go to Music4children, a wonderful charity helping to improve the lives of children around the world, so I'm hoping some of you will put your hands in your pockets, and come and support both me and the charity. You'll have a great night in the process, and you can't say fairer than that!
